Josh Nozick
Josh Nozick is an American sculptor working primarily with wood. He was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 1965 and currently resides in Millers, MD. Nozick's figurative sculptures are parametric interpretations of a single female form. Drawing on an extensive background in woodworking, he mixes traditional techniques with novel application of materials. Often constructed with a formal underlying grid structure, his pieces utilize various modes of embellishment, paint, veneers, etc. as well as multi-figure groupings to individuate all from their common ground.
His work evokes the idea of individuals as malleable variations of a UR form. It resonates with historical sculptural traditions such as the Chinese Terracotta Warrior and Greek kouros as well as contemporary ideas surrounding matters of "identity". Whether one attributes one's existence to a divine plan or to random rolls of cosmic dice, Nozick's oeuvre reminds us that the instantiated self is an unlikely miracle.
